Broome Leadership Institute Class of 2021

BLI is a program of the Greater Binghamton Education Outreach Program and runs every year from September through March. This regional program seeks to foster a network of leaders who are committed to understanding and improving the quality of living in our region. Jocelyn Bailey

Account Director, Idea Kraft

 

Jocelyn is a long time Binghamton resident and is proud to be part of BLI ’21. She graduated with a degree in Communication Design from the University at Buffalo and masters from SUNY Albany. She is part of the creative team at Idea Kraft, where she is able to use her experience in creative, design, and marketing to work with a multitude of types of clients. Jocelyn understands that collaboration, detail, and organization can take a good idea and make it a great one. While not at work, Jocelyn enjoys baking, family, photography, and swing and salsa dancing.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Maxwell Bendert

Senior Architect, Delta Engineering, Architects & Surveyors

 

Max is a licensed Architect who enjoys dabbling in artistic design in all areas of life. Whether it be sketching while visiting new locations or trying new home renovations. Being creative is his passion.

 

He enjoys meeting and working with new people and clients. Each new person brings their own unique perspective to all that design and the creative process has to offer.

 

Some of his personal passions are playing Golf and Basketball, reading, drawing, learning and practicing new languages, but most of all spending time with his beautiful wife and daughter.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Megan Waldron Carroll, MBA, PMP®

Project Manager – Strategic Planning, Lourdes

 

Megan Waldron Carroll is a Certified Project Management Professional and has been with Our Lady of Lourdes Memorial Hospital, Inc. since October 2016. In April 2018 she was promoted to Strategic Planning Project Manager. Megan has experience in Population Health, System Design, Grant Administration and Patient Care Delivery. Megan primarily works on DSRIP and Strategic Planning projects.

 

Megan received her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Fordham University in 2009 and her Master of Business Administration from Duquesne University in 2015.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Nicholas Cortese

Associate, Coughlin & Gerhart, LLP

 

Nick is a proud native of the Binghamton area, and is an Associate Attorney with Coughlin & Gerhart, LLP. He practices in the Firm’s Public Law, Labor & Employment and Litigation groups.

 

 

Prior to attending law school, Nick lived on Martha’s Vineyard and Cape Cod, Massachusetts, for several years, where he worked as a radio DJ, journalist and local TV host. Since returning home to Binghamton, Nick has devoted his free time to volunteering with the Emerging Leaders Society of the United Way of Broome County, the Community Foundation’s Young Professionals Advisory Committee, and currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Broome County Arts Council.

 

 

Nick is a huge fan of all the great golf and Italian food our area has to offer, and enjoys both as often as possible. Most of all, he believes the people of Broome County are its greatest asset, and looks forward to creating new relationships through BLI, and beyond.

 

 

 

Tina Dolan

Director, Public Policy & Program Development, UHS

 

Tina Dolan set out to be a physical education and health teacher but her career took an unexpected turn to politics where she spent 12 years working in the New York State Senate. She served as liaison to senators regarding policies and legislative positions for healthcare, mental health, disability services and long-term care providers. Her work also included emergency and crisis management in response to flooding and community violence. She now puts her experience in health education and government affairs to good use as Director of Public Policy and Program Development at United Health Services (UHS). She leads the development and advocacy of UHS’s positions on local, state and federal policy regulations. Her focus is on building collaborations to engage lawmakers and community influencers in furthering UHS’s mission of improving the health of the people they serve.

 

Tina is active in her church and local community where she serves as a member of the New Life Ministries Board of Administration, Community Foundation of South Central New York Women’s Fund Leadership Committee and Greater Binghamton Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Committee.

 

Tina has a Master of Science in Education and a Bachelor of Science in Education from the State University of New York College at Cortland. She is a certified Project Management Professional through the Project Management Institute which comes in very handy in her career but also in planning (prior to COVID-19) a lot of fun outings and parties for her family and friends to enjoy.

 

 

 

Rebecca Falank

PALS Principal, Broome-Tioga BOCES

 

Rebecca is the Principal of the PALS program at Broome-Tioga BOCES. This special education program serves students ages 5-21 with moderate to severe disabilities. In leading this program, Rebecca works closely with teachers, related services providers, paraprofessionals, and community agencies to provide students a rich educational experience focused in life skills. Rebecca’s philosophy of education is centered in the ability for all students to learn and grow and be positive, contributing members to our community.

 

Rebecca has been in the field of education for over 15 years. She studied at Marywood University and LeMoyne College and is certified in Music Education and Elementary Education, in addition to with School Building & School District Leadership. Prior to becoming a school administrator, Rebecca dedicated eight years to teaching music for the Catholic Schools of Broome County. Here she had the opportunity to work with students in kindergarten through eighth grade both in the classroom and on the stage, striving to instill self-confidence, along with a love of the arts, in her students.

 

Outside of the school setting, Rebecca is an active member of the St. Anthony of Padua church community, a wife, and mother of two. She and her family enjoy spending time together making memories and exploring all that our community has to offer.

 

Matthew Johns

Development & Marketing Coordinator, Mothers & Babies Perinatal Network

 

Matthew Johns has been working in non-profit development and fundraising for the past 10 years. For the past year, Matt has been in charge of the Development and Marketing efforts for Mothers & Babies Perinatal Network. Being a newbie to the Binghamton area, Matt is excited to become more involved in the community and help make his new hometown thrive! Matt is an avid sports fan who unfortunately has a passion for the New York Mets & New York Jets. When not being disappointed by his sports teams, Matt loves being outdoors enjoying all the great things Broome County has to offer!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Maya Jones

Talent Initiatives and YP Project Coordinator, Greater Binghamton Chamber of Commerce

 

Maya Jones grew up between NYC and Ithaca, and moved to Binghamton, NY to pursue a BS in Business Administration. She graduated in May 2018 and has since remained in Binghamton, gaining experience in marketing and event planning. Maya has been with the Greater Binghamton Chamber for two years in a newly created position as the Talent Initiatives and YP Project Coordinator, creating new programs for young professionals in the region.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Stephen Jones

Advisory Software Engineer, IBM

 

Steve Jones is an Advisory Software Engineer at IBM in Endicott, working on z/VM the Mainframe hypervisor for the last ten years. He graduated from Seton in Binghamton, Clarkson University with a BS in Computer Engineering and Binghamton University with a MS in Computer Science. He has lived in Apalachin his entire life, enjoys the outdoors and spending time with his wife, one year old daughter and dog.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Alycia Kimmel

Associate Attorney, Levene Gouldin & Thompson

 

Alycia Kimmel is an Associate Attorney at Levene Gouldin & Thompson LLP, working in their Vestal office. She has been working as an attorney at LG&T for about 2 years and focuses on the areas of estate planning and administration, elder law, real estate and not for profit work. She grew up in Harpursville, NY, graduating from Harpursville Central Schools in 2010. She obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in 2014 from Cornell University and her Juris Doctor in 2018 from Syracuse University College of Law. She is admitted to practice law in the states of New York and Florida.

 

Away from the office, Alycia enjoys outdoor activities, cooking, and spending time with her three dogs. Since returning to the area, she has become more involved in the Binghamton community, serving as a volunteer and/or board member for multiple local organizations.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Emily Laude

Customer Service Manager, National Pipe & Plastics

 

Emily Laude has been in the customer service field for 27 years. She is the Customer Service Manager at National Pipe & Plastics, where she leads and develops the customer service team. Emily and her husband also own a trucking company out of Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania.

 

Emily is an active member in her local community. She has been a board member for Blue Ridge Little League for 11 years. She lives in Great Bend, Pennsylvania; is married and has three daughters and one granddaughter. In her spare time, she enjoys camping, cooking and reading.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Michael Leahey

Director of Development, Broome County Council of Churches

 

Michael Leahey has worked in various roles in the non-profit sector over the last 25 years. He considers it an honor to work in a field that helps create a better Broome County. At the Broome County Council of Churches as the Director of Community Relations and Development, he spends his days educating the community about social issues and connecting people who want to help their neighbors in need.

 

When not working Michael enjoys hiking, traveling, enjoying craft beer and listening to podcasts and the Blues with his family. Michale sees all of the positive things going on in Broome County and is excited to be part of the BLI Class of 2021 to learn about different ways he can continue to give back.

 

 

 

 

 

Njeri Macharia

Vice President and Senior Branch Manager, M&T Bank

 

Jeri Macharia has been in banking since she graduated from Kenyatta University, Nairobi, Kenya in October 2000 with a degree in business specializing in Banking and Finance.

She and her husband moved to Binghamton, NY in 2004 so that he could pursue a PhD in Political Science. She got a job as a part time teller at M&T Bank and slowly worked her way up to Vice President and Senior Branch Manager. In 2016, she graduated with an MBA from Binghamton University.

 

She lives on the West side of the City of Binghamton with her husband and 14-year-old daughter and 11-year-old son.

 

She volunteers with several organizations in the Southern Tier including the Rotary Club of Vestal, The Southern Tier Swim Club and serves on the Board of directors of St Francis Ministry which is in the process of fundraising to complete the construction of a boarding school in Nairobi, Kenya.

 

Jeri enjoys spending time with her family, gardening, hiking, listening to podcasts and travelling.

 

 

 

Matt Mirabito

Director of Sales, Mirabito Energy Products

 

Matt was born on Long Island, moved to Binghamton in the fall of 1999. He graduated from Chenango Forks High School, Broome Community College, and Pace University in 2013. After graduating from Pace, Matt worked in New York as a sales representative for Monster Energy. In 2015 I moved upstate to work for Mirabito Energy Products living in Binghamton and Syracuse, before purchasing a home this past year in Binghamton. He has been with Mirabito for 5 years in addition to being summer and winter help when he would be on break from school. Matt has worn many various different hats for Mirabito including Store Manager, District Manager, and Category Manager before becoming the Director of Sales for the Convenience Store division. When Matt is away from the office he is usually watching or coaching sports. Matt is an avid sports fan, he likes the Jets, Mets, Knicks, and Islanders.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Lindsey Mott

Community Initiatives Manager, United Way of Broome County

 

Lindsey Mott is the Community Initiatives Manager at United Way of Broome County. She moved to the area in 2017 to pursue a Masters of Public Administration at Binghamton University and joined the United Way team shortly after receiving her degree in 2019. What Lindsey enjoys most about her current position are the opportunities to learn and innovate each day as she works with United Way’s partners to ensure that every Broome County resident has the resources they need to lead a happy and healthy life.

 

Having received her Bachelor of Arts in Art History from Virginia Commonwealth University, Lindsey remains passionate about the arts and the role they play in building empathy and promoting healing in communities. Away from the office, Lindsey is an avid foodie, a gamer, and an aunt to three nieces.

 

 

 

 

 

Heather Murphy

Director of Development, United Methodist Homes

 

Heather was born and raised in the Southern Tier of NY but settled in Northeast PA after receiving her BS in Psychology (University of Scranton) and MSW in Social Work (Marywood University). She has over 18 years of nonprofit experience, specializing in grant writing, fundraising, special events, and community collaboration. Before coming to United Methodist Homes, Heather spent seven years as the Development Director at the Greater Carbondale YMCA and earned her Team Leader Certification through Y-USA.

 

 

Heather currently volunteers as a religious education instructor at her local parish and spends a great deal of time assisting with the Wayne County 4H program. She and her husband live on a 5 acre homestead with their five children. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family, crafting, and cooking.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Debra Sablich

Loan Servicing Manager, Visions Federal Credit Union

 

Debra is originally from a small farming community in Colby, Wisconsin. After enjoying 8 years as a Flight Attendant and a Union President she moved to Endicott, New York. She began her career with Visions Federal Credit Union 16 years ago and is now the Loan Servicing Manager. Debra with the assistance of her amazing team oversee all aspects of the Credit and Debit card portfolio and supports the servicing and support of all consumer loans. Debra is currently pursuing a degree in Business Administration. She is an ordained Deacon for her local church and has served as one of their Sunday School teachers for the last 14 years.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Nicole Waskie-Laura

Assistant Director for Instructional Technology and Educational Resources, Broome-Tioga BOCES

 

Nicole was born and raised in Broome County, and has worked in the field of education for over 13 years. She currently serves as the Assistant Director for Instructional Technology and Educational Resources at Broome-Tioga BOCES, where she provides professional learning opportunities for educators, facilitates student access to local arts and culture, and maintains a regional collection of resources for student and professional use.

 

Nicole loves to learn and would happily be a perpetual student. She received her Bachelors of Arts in English from SUNY Geneseo, her Masters of Library and Information Science from the University of Buffalo, her Masters of Science in Educational Administration from the University of Scranton, her Advanced Certificate in Educational Leadership and Supervision from Canisius College, and is currently a student in the Educational Theory, Research, and Practice EdD program at Binghamton University. In her free time, Nicole enjoys adventuring with her family, flexing her craft muscles, and drinking way too much coffee.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Amy Williamson

Marketing & Communications Manager, The Agency Broome County IDA/LDC

 

Amy Williamson serves as the Marketing & Communications Manager for The Agency – Broome County IDA/LDC. Having recently graduated from Binghamton University, she is excited to be launching her career in Broome County. As an undergraduate, Amy held multiple professional internships at the local, state and federal levels of government which have prepared her to be a strong advocate for Broome County’s development. When not working at The Agency, Amy serves as a Board Member and Secretary to the American Cancer Society’s Southern Tier NY Board of Advisors or can be found baking up a storm in her kitchen.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Peter Zayac

Technical Lead, ICS

 

A Johnson City native, Peter spent his younger years locally before moving out of Broome County at age 11. After returning to the area at age 21 he started his career in technology, eventually growing his skills to secure a position as a Systems Engineer with ICS. Over the last four years, his main focus has been to mature both personal and professionally. He has recently secured the role of Technical Lead with a focus of driving service operations and technical mentoring others in the service team at the Endicott branch. As he continues to build his skill set and others around him, he is always looking for new ways to improve service delivery and efficiency for clients.

 

Peter is a lover of craft beer, especially The North Brewery in Endicott, where ICS is located. He has always held an eclectic list of interests including headphones, mechanical keyboards, board games, sneakers, and cooking, and he is always looking for new and interesting things to learn about.
