Security Mutual Life’s Board of Directors Announces Promotion of Four Officers

Security Mutual Life’s Board of Directors has announced the promotion of four officers.


Christopher J. Walsh was promoted to Vice President, Chief Information Security Officer. Mr. Walsh joined Security Mutual in 2001 as Senior Network and Technical Services Team Leader. He was promoted to a number of positions and has been serving as Second Vice President Information Security Officer & Infrastructure Architect since 2013. Mr. Walsh is responsible for Security Mutual’s overall corporate information security, cybersecurity, and data center and networking infrastructure, including all hardware, operating systems, communications, telecommunications and security.


Gerri L. Corey, CPA, was promoted to Second Vice President, Financial Reporting. Ms. Corey began her career with Security Mutual Life in 2012, joining the Financial Operations Department as Manager, Financial Reporting. In 2014 she was promoted to Director, Financial Reporting, and in 2015 to Assistant Vice President, Financial Reporting. She is responsible for the preparation and reporting of financial analyses, including quarterly and annual financial statements, for Security Mutual and its wholly owned subsidiaries. She also manages the financial, escheat reporting, tax reporting, and fixed asset accounting functions.


Oliver T. Hicks has been promoted to Second Vice President, Software Engineering. After joining Security Mutual in 1997 as a Creative Design Coordinator, Mr. Hicks was promoted to Programmer Analyst in 2001, followed by promotion to Senior Software Developer in 2003, to Lead Software Developer in 2010 and to Assistant Vice President, Software Engineering, in 2014. He is responsible for leading and managing Security Mutual’s web-based software architecture design, development, and testing across the Company’s lines of business, as well as for providing architectural guidance pertaining to overall software solutions.


Deborah A. Schafer, ACS, AIRC, has been promoted to Second Vice President, Underwriting. Ms. Schafer began her career with Security Mutual Life in 1973 and joined the Underwriting Department in 1982 as an Administrative Assistant. She was promoted to Underwriter, Director and Assistant Vice President roles between 1991 and 2007, and rejoined Security Mutual’s Underwriting Department in 2010 as an Advanced Underwriter. Ms. Schafer is responsible for the underwriting of Security Mutual’s individual life insurance policies, as well as for managing the Company’s Underwriting Department.


Security Mutual announced that 2017 was another year of solid financial performance for the Binghamton-based life insurance company, continuing a 131-year history of financial strength and providing long-term policyholder value.
