Chamber Meets with Unshackle Upstate
We recently made the trip up to Albany, with the rest of the Unshackle Upstate leadership, to start the conversation on advocacy items for the 2018 legislative session. We held meetings with the Senate Majority Counsel, Assembly Majority Counsel and the Governor’s Counsel.
During these lengthy meetings we discussed many different items of concern that we believe will be cropping up in the 2018 budget and legislative session. We wanted to inform all three legislative bodies how the business community will be affected by different legislative items being discussed. These items included: expansion of the prevailing wage, state regulations and the process of incorporating new mandates, NYS’s MWBE program, Workers’ Compensation, the Regional Economic Development Councils, the tax culture in New York and facing a deficit.
The conversations was led and directed by Greg Biryla, Executive Director of Unshackle Upstate, and we all generally believed that the conversations were constructive. All three bodies said they would continue to have a dialogue with Unshackle Upstate on these topics and if anything was being suggested, our input would be helpful.
The New York State 2018 Legislative calendar has been released, so as the budget process starts to progress we will keep all our members informed on items of concern.
